Students undertake independent research projects and receive regular advice from a specialist supervisor. Current areas of research include: Central and East European studies; eEnvironmental history; historical research; Iranian studies; mediaeval history; mediaeval studies; Middle Eastern history, and culture; modern historiography; modern history; Reformation studies; Scottish historical studies; the book; history and techniques of analysis.
Applicants are expected to have completed a Master's degree. Each application is based on its own merits. Students whose 1st language is not English must submit evidence of language competency.
No modules are studied as part of the PhD programme.
MPhil: 9 months of coursework followed by a dissertation of 15,000 words completed in the final 3 months. PhD: An original thesis of 80,000 words.
