Cultural Identity Studies

These programmes addresses key questions of cultural identity: How collective identities are constructed; how they survive, and change; investigates the account of those questions offered by languages, and literatures of Britain's European neighbours; offers a theoretical grasp of different factors, and dimension of the problem of cultural identity, and a chance to explore ways in which a particular identity is represented, reflected, and reflected upon, in 1 or more of the following cultural traditions: France, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Italy, Russia.

Entry requirements

A good degree with Honours from a UK university, 2.1 or its equivalent. All applicants, whose 1st language is not English, require IELTS grade of 7.0, or equivalent.

Course modules

Core modules: Problems of cultural identity and theory; practice of literary research. Optional modules include: Perceptions of French literature and culture; cultural identities of Latin America; German identities; film and issues of European identity; Europe and America (identity formation in texts); film, memory and identity (the cinema of Nanni Moretti).

Assessment methods

MLitt: 9 months of ongoing coursework and a dissertation of 15,000 words. MPhil: 9 months of coursework and a supervised research thesis of 40,000 words.
