Scottish Historical Studies

The course explores multiple, and often conflicting Scottish identities, as they have developed over time in the broader context of British, imperial, and global history. It gives the opportunity to pursue intensive study of the literature of a topic of choice, under the guidance of an expert supervisor, to build up technical skills in languages, bibliography, palaeography, quantitative and computing skills. Supplementary classes are available: Scots; Gaelic; Latin; Old Norse; Anglo-Saxon; French; paleography.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree, normally a minimum of a UK 2.1 or equivalent, GPA 3.6 or better. All applicants whose 1st language is not English must submit evidence of language competency.

Course modules

Core modules: Scottish historical studies; directed reading in Scottish history. Plus 1 from: Living with the lion (themes in the study of mediaeval Scotland); religion and identity in early modern Britain; building Britain (the construction and deconstruction of Britishness).

Assessment methods

MLitt: 9 months coursework and a supervised dissertation of 15,000 words. MPhil: 9 months coursework and a supervised thesis of 40,000 words.
