Bible and Contemporary World

The MLitt in Bible and the Contemporary World is an interdisciplinary programme between biblical and theological studies and aims to enable students to relate the Christian tradition in creative and productive ways to various aspects of the contemporary world. This course is available in two formats; as a traditional residential programme in St Andrews and as a part-time virtual programme, largely via the internet. Either way, you join with others from across the world in relating the Christian tradition to a host of aspects of life. From guided reading, lectures and online discussions you gain an understanding of how culture shapes, and has been shaped by, Christian belief, practice and theology. You become critically aware of disputes, how these are addressed in scholarly literature, and learn how to develop your own judgements on matters of serious common concern.

Entry requirements

Postgraduate diploma: degree from a UK university, it's equivalent, or other relevant qualification. MLitt: good degree with Honours from a UK university, or it's equivalent (USA GPA of 3.6; PR China GPA of 3.2, 2.1 class, or better).

Course modules

We offer 1 module each semester from a portfolio that addresses the relationships between biblical and theological concerns, contermporary literature, and issues of national and international public policy. Some modules are thematic whilst others focus more explicitly on the biblical text.

Assessment methods

Each module is assessed independently. Students who wish to graduate with the MLitt (Master's) qualification must also successfully complete a dissertation of 15,000 words. Dissertation fee: £2,270 (Home/EU), £5,690 (Overseas).
