The course is designed to reflect the increasing demand by postgraduate applicants for advanced studies in finance, and cognate areas. The programme offers modules which should attract students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Students will obtain transferable technical skills in empirical financial modelling, become knowledgeable about the functioning and rationale of leading financial institutions both in the UK and abroad and pursue advanced studies in finance and cognate areas.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (single, or joint honours), or overseas equivalent, in economics, or cognate subject, with some mathematical, statistical, and some economics, finance, or business content from a UK, EU, US, or other overseas university institution (e.g. USA GPA of 3.6, or better; course average of 85 per cent, or higher from good PR China university; 2.1, or better). All applicants should be fluent in written, and oral English; preferred credentials are IELTS 7, TOEFL equivalents: paper based.

Course modules

Semester 1 (autumn) compulsory modules: Investment analysis; financial econometrics; international finance. Semester 2 (spring) compulsory modules: Corporate finance; portfolio theory and management. Optional modules (choose 1): Corporate governance and risk; financial intermediation; mergers and acquisitions; risk management.

Assessment methods

Postgraduate diploma: Coursework (120 credits). MSc: Coursework (120 credits); dissertation (60 credits). The dissertation is usually 15,000 words of original research.
