The main aim of this programme is to provide a Stage 1 Professional Training for Chartered Health Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society. This includes a theoretical basis for understanding the major psychological factors that are associated with the attainment and maintenance of health including a detailed focus on health behaviour. Specifically, the course aims to provide students with a recent background knowledge of the major theories of explaining health beliefs, emotions and behaviour within the context of a modern developed health provider system, provide students with an advanced understanding of critical appraisal, research methods and statistical techniques typically employed in the field of health psychology and develop the practical skills associated with the planning of research projects, the analysis of data, and the communication and dissemination of research findings.
An Honours degree (1st Class or 2.1) in psychology from a British university, or its equivalent from an overseas institution. Graduates whose initial training has been in a cognate discipline are also welcome. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require: IELTS 7.0 or above; TOEFL: paper based 580-600; computer based 237-250; internet-based 90-100; Cambridge CPE (Grade C), Cambridge CAE (Grade B), O Level/GCSE (Grade C).
Core modules in Semester 1: Theories of health psychology and behaviour change; quality of life, communication and chronic illness; research and professional skills in psychology. Semester 2 core modules: Biological systems and development; health information and decision making; methods of data analysis in psychology. You will also embark on an empirical research project, covering both Semesters, in applied psychology to complete the module: Research project in health psychology.
MSc: Examination by set papers, continuous assessment and a supervised dissertation of 15,000 words.
