Research activities, include but not limited to: Diode-pump solid-state, microchip, semiconductor, inversionless, and ultra short pulse lasers; optical parametric devices; ultra-high-speed electron-optical streak, and framing cameras; time-domain spectroscopy in photophysics, photochemistry, and photobiology; quantum optics; non-linear optics; electromagnetic transparency; laser-cooled, and trapped atoms, cold atom beams; photonic band gap materials; light-emitting polymers; bulk, and low-dimensional semiconductor materials, and optoelectronic devices; instrumentation for 50 to 500 GHz spectral range; magnetic, structural, and electronic properties of crystalline, and amorphous alloys; nuclear magnetic resonance; electron spin resonance; neutron scattering, and muon spin relaxation studies of rare earth, and transition metal magnets; flux lattice distributions in high-temperature, and conventional superconductors; giant magneto resistance; development of neutron, muon, and magnetic measurement techniques; quantum criticality, and novel forms of quantum order.
A good UK Honours degree or equivalent. Overseas applicants whose 1st language is not English must, in addition, provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (e.g. a satisfactory British Council IELTS score).
There are no taught modules included in this research programme.
Students complete a supervised 80,000-word thesis.
