Photonics and Optoelectronic Devices

The course is run jointly by this School and the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences in Heriot-Watt University, giving students access to the broad and somewhat complementary range of photonics expertise at the 2 sites. The course provides postgraduate vocational training in lasers, modern optics and semiconductors, tailored to the needs of the optoelectronics and optical communications industries, as well as a good training for a research degree in this field.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, or recognised equivalent, from an accredited institution; minimum 3 years full time study, or 180 ECTS credits, in electrical engineering, applied physics, physics, materials science, or a related discipline; students in the last year of such Bachelor programmes are considered; all applicants whose 1st language is not English require: 1 year English-language study programme, either at a different institution of higher education or at a secondary school; TOEFL-TEST, taken as recently as within the last 2years, showing a score of at least 570 paper-based, or 87 internet-based; an original 'test report from' (TRF) from IELTS, issued as recently as within the last 2 years, showing a score of at least 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 per each part; a secondary education diploma, an academic Bachelor's diploma, or a Master's diploma, awarded by an educational institution that is duly recognised by the Flemish Community, no proof of sufficient English language ability must be provided.

Course modules

1st year in 1 country: Studying a range of modules. 2nd year in 2nd country studying advanced taught-course modules and a research project.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include coursework and research project dissertation.
