Astrophysics

The course material covers both theoretical and observational astrophysics and helps develop the research skills that students need to carry out research programmes in astrophysics. The taught modules include topics on observational astronomy, stars and gaseous nebulae, galaxies and cosmology, gravitational dynamics and accretion physics, astrophysical fluids, magnetofluids, radiation transfer, advanced data analysis and topics in contemporary astrophysics.

Entry requirements

Candidates should hold a good Honours degree (2.1 or better), or its equivalent, from a British or overseas university, but lesser qualifications linked to appropriate experience may be acceptable.

Course modules

The programme includes two research projects, a shorter introductory project as part of our research skills module and a longer, full semester research project. These two will provide the necessary research skills and experience in order for students to assess their desire for, and abilities to pursue a career in scientific research. Students will also be able to gain experience in observational studies at the University Observatory and the 0.94m James Gregory Telescope. Once students have gained sufficient observational expertise, they can pursue observational research projects using either our local facilities or remote observing at international facilities.

Assessment methods

Candidates will be assessed through coursework and a 15,000 word dissertation due at the end of the academic year.
