Evolutionary and Comparative Psychology (The Origins of the Mind)
The course provides advanced research training in intellectual, and practical skills associated with evolutionary, and comparative approaches to the study of mind. It also covers detailed knowledge of the evolutionary, and comparative literature, and principal theoretical, and methodological issues in this field and provides students with the statistical, and methodological skills, necessary to undertake research in evolutionary psychology. Furthermore, it tackles fundamental issues associated with the origins of human cognition via a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches.
A good Honours degree, minimum 2.1, in psychology from a British university, or its equivalent from an overseas institution, or applications from graduates whose initial training has been in a cognate discipline. All applicants whose 1st language is not English, require IELTS 7.0 or above, TOEFL: paper based 580-600; computer based 237-250; (dependent on course) internet-based 90-100; Cambridge CPE (Grade C), Cambridge CAE (Grade B), O Level, GCSE (Grade C).
Compulsory modules: Principal appoaches to the origins of mind; empirical approaches to the evolution of communication; the origins of human cognition; methods of data analysis in psychology. Optional modules: Evolution and development of social and technical intelligence; origins of evolution of mind reading (theory of mind); generic research and professional skills in psychology; methodologies for psychology and neuroscience. Summer: Research project (dissertation).
MSc: 9 months of coursework and a supervised 15,000-word dissertation.
