University of St Mark & St John

The University College Plymouth St Mark & St John (or UCP Marjon as we're better known) has been training teachers since 1840 making us the most experienced teacher training institution in the South West.

We regularly receive outstanding results in our Ofsted inspections and in a recent TDA survey of newly qualified teachers we ranked top ten for the quality of our training. We've also ranked top ten twice in the past three years for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey.

UCP Marjon is different from other institutions. We are small, hence our University College title. Here there is a strong sense of community and support. We consider ourselves a family, where students and tutors are on a first name basis. When it comes to contact time with your tutors, it's not a question of how much time will you get, but instead how much time would you like. We have some excellent researching academics, however UCP Marjon is a teaching led (opposed to a research led) institution. As a training teacher, this means the focus of our academic staff will be on your development, not their research.

Our campus is located a couple of miles outside of the Plymouth City Centre. It's a safe, friendly campus with student parking. The campus is WiFi enabled. This is ideal, as all PGCE and BEd students receive a free laptop when they enrol. We offer this, because at UCP Marjon learning goes well beyond the lectures and seminars. Our virtual learning environment (LearningSpace) is available 24 hours a day and keeps you in contact with tutors, lessons learning and teaching aids, the library and your fellow student teachers. This is essential when on school placements. To ensure that all of our student teachers benefit from this enriched learning environment, we pioneered this free laptop scheme.
