Professional Studies (Education)

The course provides students with the opportunity to design and develop their own assessments within a very flexible mode of delivery, which includes: 1-to-1 tutorials; distance-learning and attendance at Saturday practitioner days throughout the year. The course is centred on students' own professional development needs, research interests and work-based contexts, enabling them to write assignments which will inform change in their practice settings and further enhance their subject-specialist knowledge.

Entry requirements

Normally a 1st degree but admission on the grounds of experience is considered for highly experienced applicants. Accreditation of prior, certificated learning can be given for a maximum of 90 credits for relevant Masters' study undertaken within the 5 years prior to enrolment. All applicants are asked to complete a professional development plan on entry to the course to determine their choice of modules and pattern of study.

Course modules

Modules include: Independent study; professional practice portfolio; research design; dissertation; leadership and governance of church schools; developing co-operative learning approaches to teaching and learning; values-based education; newly-qualified teacher career development portfolio; managing inclusion in the classroom; leadership in learning and education contexts; becoming a reflective practitioner.
