English Language and Linguistics

This course offers students the opportunity to study the intricate workings of language and explore its central role in society. You will have the opportunity to investigate how language works, how people use it, what people use it for, where it came from and how it changes.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2nd class honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply.
IELTS 6.0 (5.5 in all bands)

Course modules

Old and middle English; language and cognition; language learning: theory and research; sociolinguistics and varieties of English; historical linguistics and the history of English; evolutionary linguistics; discourse analysis; corpus linguistics.

Assessment methods

Assessment is via module coursework and the dissertation.
