Offshore Floating Systems

This course is designed for experienced or newly-qualified engineers in naval architecture, marine engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering or other related disciplines; its main objectives are: to produce high-calibre graduates with in-depth knowledge in offshore floating systems capable of making significant contributions to the offshore oil and gas industry; to provide an opportunity for graduate engineers of related disciplines to acquire advanced knowledge in offshore floating systems; to provide students with practical knowledge of offshore floating systems, their conceptions, design and installation, with a sound basis of mathematical and engineering fundamentals.

Course modules

Instructional modules: Inspection and survey; offshore engineering practice; risers and mooring lines; dynamics of floating offshore installations; finite element analysis of floating structure; maritime safety and risk; design and construction of floating, production, storage and offloading vessels. Elective modules: Advanced marine structures; theory and practice of marine computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Assessment methods

There are two types of method for module assessment. One is course work assessment only, the other is examination assessment. For examined modules the final assessment mark consists of 30-40 per cent course work marks and 60-70 examination marks.
