Advanced Mechanical Engineering with Power Plant Technologies

This course was introduced last year and is aimed at students who want to study advanced topics in mechanical engineering with a focus on power plant technologies. It provides mechanical engineering graduates with an in-depth technical understanding of advanced mechanical engineering topics relevant to the power generation industry. You'll also develop generic skills that allow you to contribute effectively in developing company capabilities. The course helps to make you more employable and also satisfies the further learning requirements necessary to obtain Chartered Engineer status.

Entry requirements

MSc: Degree in engineering or physical sciences or equivalent professional qualification. Preferably a first a second class honours degree, equivalent to a UK 2:1 degree. A 2:2 may be considered with relevant industrial experience.

Compulsory modules: Electrical power systems; gas and steam turbines; boiler thermal hydraulics. Optional modules: Engineering composites; pressurised systems; aerodynamic performance; aerodynamic propulsion systems; systems engineering 1; systems engineering 2; machine dynamics; machinery diagnosis and condition monitoring; spaceflight mechanics; advanced topics in fluid systems engineering; polymer and polymer composites; materials for power plant; energy and resources and policy; energy modelling and monitoring; industrial metallurgy. Generic modules: Design management; project management; risk management; financial engineering; sustainability; environmental impact assessment;

Assessment methods

Assessment is by written assignments, exams and the individual project.
