Hydrogeology is a key component of water resources management required to meet the UN millennium development goals and the decade water for life as well as meeting the targets required from the European water framework directive (and daughter directive) and as a subset of geotechnical engineering; this MSc prepares students as functional hydrogeologists to meet the needs of industry, regulators, government and consultants throughout the UK, Europe and globally, through linked research and projects, the needs of the Middle East and of the SADC (south African developing countries) such as Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Entry requirements

Normally, a 1st or Upper 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university or equivalent overseas qualification; degree in earth science/geology/civil engineering/environmental engineering/water engineering required; IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90-95 IBT or 600.

Course modules

Core modules: Hydrogeology; aquifer mechanics; groundwater flow modelling; global water policy; research protocols for science and engineering; site investigation and risk assessment; environmental chemistry; contaminated land. Optional modules: Principles of sustainability; principles of environmental microbiology; strategic environmental assessment in action; fundamentals of environmental forensics; environmental impact assessment; ecology, biodiversity and sustainability; pollution and rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems; environmental law; pollution control policy; water and environmental management; waste management and landfill design; geographical information systems (GIS).

Sponsorship information

The Department of Civil Engineering/David Livingstone Centre for Sustainability at the University of Strathclyde offers fees-only Excellence Awards to UK/EU students; in addition, �1,000 Excellence Awards for overseas students are also available; the awards are allocated based on the quality of the student but applying early increases the chances of successful allocation.
