Operations Management in Engineering

This course is for graduates wishing to broaden their expertise (from a technological 1st degree); students who wish to work within the engineering industry; it provides theories, concepts and tools enabling students to analyse and implement solutions to operations management issues in an engineering environment.

Entry requirements

MSc: 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university (or equivalent) in engineering, technology, business or a similar discipline; industrial experience is valued and exemptions based on work experience or other similar courses may be possible: PgDip: degree or HND, or equivalent; relevant industrial experience is valued.

Course modules

Compulsory Modules: Ecological and environmental impact; management of total quality and continuous improvement; manufacturing and business strategy; people, organisation and technology; project work and project management; risk management; optional module (choose 1 from the following): facilities management; logistics; group project; teams of students tackle problems of practical relevance in cooperation with external personnel, participating in field trips and presenting reports; successful completion of the modules and group project leads to a postgraduate diploma.

Assessment methods

Each student undertakes an individual project assignment: a selected topic studied in depth; a comprehensive literature review; defining realistic objectives; devising a method of approach; systematically carrying out the work and preparing a thesis; successful completion of 7 modules, a group project and individual project leads to the award of an Master's.
