Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Entry requirements

At least a 2nd Class Honours degree in electronic and electrical engineering or a related subject; candidates with other qualifications may also be considered; candidates whose 1st language is not English and who have not obtained their qualifications in an English-speaking institution must achieve: TOEF 100 (internet based); 250 (computer based); 600 (written); or IELTS 6.5.

Course modules

During these semesters, students select a group of classes to either obtain a broad knowledge of electronic and electrical engineering systems or to specialise in a particular area; the list of classes is extensive and may include the following: Energy conversion and drives; power system analysis and design; electricity markets and systems economics; sales, purchasing and marketing; robotics design; measurements and feedback systems; high voltage; technology design and application; protection control and intelligent systems; statistics for engineers; entrepreneurship: Introduction to business start-up; fundamentals of engineering management; modelling and simulation of industrial control systems; real time processing systems and applications; mechatronic systems; managing people; electromagnetic fields; computer control of systems.

Assessment methods

Semester 3 (June � September): students undertake a dissertation to highlight the practical/research aspect of their chosen specialisation; depending on the project, arrangements can be made for the practical work to be carried out at a participating industrial establishment; the work is carried out full-time under the supervision of a member of staff or, in industry, under the joint supervision of an academic and an industrial supervisor.
