This course enables students to teach in any UK or EU primary school and in many other parts of the world; it prepares students to teach the full range of the primary curriculum from nursery to primary 7; it uses participative styles of learning and encourages personal development through self-help and enquiry skills; the programme is delivered by the Faculty of Education in partnership with local primary schools; ideas discussed in the Faculty are applied in the practical situation of a school, and theory and practice are brought together to allow students to reflect on both; the course develops skills enabling students to work cooperatively with colleagues and agencies involved in education; on completion students are recommended to the General Teaching Council for Scotland for provisional registration.
Degree of a UK university or the CNA, plus Higher English and Standard grade mathematics at 2 or better; evidence of having worked with young people or the general public, an understanding of modern primary education and an ability to relate to people are taken into account.
The Faculty-based component is taught in 9 modules: planning for effective teaching and learning: primary 4-7; planning for effective teaching and learning: the early years; educational studies; mathematics in the primary school; language in the primary school; environmental studies and health education; expressive arts and physical education; religious and moral education; option module.
