Public Policy

This course provides rigorous training in the analytical frameworks and methods required in the study of public policy. Students explore the various methodological tools and their connections to real world problems facing governments and related organisations. Students learn a range of key skills: analytical and critical thinking; research management; data analysis; report writing and presentation.

Entry requirements

1st or 2.1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in social science; IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual component below 5.5) or TOEFL ib 92.

Course modules

Core modules: comparative public policy; policy analysis. Choose two classes from the following: principles of research design; quantitative methods 1; quantitative methods 2; qualitative methods. Elective modules: European governance; European political economy; contesting global governance; international institutions and regimes; principles of research design; quantitative methods 1; quantitative methods 2; qualitative methods.

Assessment methods

Essays, options papers and group projects. These account for two thirds of the total assessment. The dissertation accounts for one third of the total assessment.
