Research groups in: high-performance information systems: compression techniques based on fractal technology are being applied to range of application areas which include video material and databases; spin-off activity is leading to commercial exploitation of this work; algorithms, problems and empirical studies: emphasis on constraint satisfaction as well as on novel methods for classifying computationally difficult problems; ideas have been applied to management of networks and this has given rise to a BT-supported Network Management Centre; software engineering: interests centred on empirical foundations of software engineering and quality considerations with these latter embracing process and product, formal techniques and applications to safety critical systems; computers in education: 2 broad strands to this work: development of concept of a virtual university; issues concerning qualify in computer science education.
