Industrial Biotechnology

This course covers advanced state-of-the-art topics in a wide range of industrial biotechnology-related areas. A 3 month placement is offered, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable experience working with one of IBioIC's industrial partners.

Entry requirements

1st or 2nd Class Honours degree in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, chemical engineering or a related subject. Other qualifications and industrial experience may be considered. English language: IELTS 6.5 is required for all non-English speakers.

Course modules

Compulsory classes: introduction to industrial biotechnology and its governance; bioprocessing; applied biocatalysis; synthetic biology; practical systems biology; downstream processing; elective classes; choose from this list; blue biotechnology; renewable energy technologies; resource efficient formulation; production management for brewing and distilling; case studies in supply chain management; advanced project management. MSc only; industrial biotechnology research project.

Assessment methods

The final assessment is based on performance in exams, coursework and the research project. If necessary there may be a formal oral exam.
