Operational Research

This course converts high-quality or graduates in numerate disciplines into good practitioners; Master's and diploma candidates follow the same curriculum; Master's candidates then produce a dissertation; diploma students of an appropriate standard may transfer to the Master's; completion of the 1st half of the diploma leads to the award of a postgraduate certificate; lectures, tutorials and lab classes are integrated with other learning experiences and include: a 3-week apprenticeship period, spent with a practising OR group.

Entry requirements

MSc: Good 1st degree or other qualification equivalent to a 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree from a UK university, which must include an acceptable level of mathematics: PgDip/PgCert: Degree or equivalent qualification or relevant practical experience.

Course modules

Foundations of operational research and business analysis; quantitative business analysis; managing business operations; spreadsheet modelling and demand forecasting; operational research methods. Elective Classes (3 to be chosen): Business simulation methods; risk analysis and management; decision analysis; advanced or modelling with specialised software; spring school elective.

Assessment methods

Students undertake a 3 month project, typically for an external organisation, applying the concepts and theories studied on the course.

EPSRC quota awards available; SAAS awards available for Scottish students for PgDip, in-course transfer to MSc available.
