Through this course you will evaluate your existing knowledge of computer science and then fill any gaps in topics such as computer architecture, algorithms, computer modelling, programming, machine representation of data, database management and the social implications of computing. To join this Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) course you should already have received a conditional offer for a programme of initial teacher training, such as our PGCE Computer Science. The course will be tailored to your specific needs, allowing you to rapidly gain the required knowledge. Your tutors will organise workshops and tutorials, and the course makes use of the expertise of our partnership schools as well as Computing At School.

Entry requirements

We usually require applicants to already have an offer of a place on a course for initial teacher training. Their offer may be conditional on successful completion of this SKE course. We will ask about your previous knowledge and experience so that we can ensure that you study the right number of units.

Course modules

You will choose topics based on your individual needs. There are topics that cover the following broad areas: Programming; computer architecture; algorithms; machine representation of data; organising and handling data in databases; social implications of computing; computer modelling.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include written work, exams and presentations.
