Translation

Students study translation practice in small language-specific groups, with a focus on professional standards. There is a wide range of options to choose from, allowing them to customise their studies. Languages currently on offer (subject to demand) are: Arabic; Chinese (Mandarin); French; German; Greek; Italian; Norwegian; Polish; Portuguese; Russian; Spanish; Swedish; and Turkish, all paired with English.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a UK 2.2 Honours degree or equivalent in a relevant language, translation or other relevant subject. Speakers of other languages: an equivalent to a minimum of a UK 2.2 Honours degree in English or another relevant subject. In exceptional cases, alternative qualifications and professional experience may be considered. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5 with a score of 7.0 in writing and 6.0 in all other components.

Course modules

Modules include: Translation issues; specialist translation; ab initio language for translation purposes; translation technologies; cultural aspects of translation; research methods in translation; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include a dissertation.

Sponsorship information

Self-financing; career development loans; Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC); students from Sweden may apply to the CSN and students from Norway to the Statenslanekasse; a small number of bursaries towards tuition fees are normally offered and are awarded competitively.
