Creative Writing

The programme offers a unique opportunity to enhance student's creative, critical and professional skills. It is taught by published writers and research-active academics expert in their fields, with strong links to professional writers, journalists and publishers. Our programme is designed to build confidence and technical ability in composing creative prose and/or poetry; it helps students to gain hands-on practical skills and fuller understanding of the professional possibilities in their chosen field of artistic endeavour. In your 1st year students study alongside students in the MA programmes in Creative Writing and English Literature. Over the course of the year, students develop an impressive portfolio of increasingly sophisticated creative work. In the 2nd year students produce an extended creative portfolio and critical commentary; a chance to produce a sizeable piece of creative writing in prose or poetry and to reflect upon the cultural contexts and creative challenges of this work. These pieces of writing mark the culmination of the 2 year MFA, allowing students to demonstrate how far they have developed as a creative writer and critical thinker.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a 1st or 2.1 degree (or equivalent); plus a portfolio of creative material (5,000 words prose or equivalent). In exceptional cases, a proven commitment to creative writing can be taken in lieu of a degree. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS overall score of 7.0 with 7.0 in writing and a minimum of 6.0 in all other components.
