Social Research Methods

The programme won't just train students in the application of specific research techniques: It will also illuminate the connections between sociological theory and empirical research, and relate research to the development of public policy and the analysis of substantive social issues. Wider issues of the social research process are also covered. These include the planning and management of research projects, research ethics and the presentation and publication of research findings.

Entry requirements

Usually a UK 1st or 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in a social science or related subject. Entry is also open to professionally trained non-graduates with relevant experience and qualifications. Basic numeracy (a GCSE pass at grade C or above in maths). Applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS overall score of 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: Data analysis; field methods; theory and methodology; statistical modelling; principles of survey design; documentary analysis and online research; research: From design to dissemination; evaluation research; workshops in advanced methods; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include a dissertation.
