Structural Engineering

This programme aims to develop the knowledge and skills acquired in their undergraduate programme, particularly in gaining advanced capabilities in the areas of analysis and codified design in specialised aspects of structural engineering � highly sought after by the industry.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 60 per cent in an Honours degree in civil engineering accredited to CEng, or a minimum of 70 per cent in an Honours degree in civil engineering accredited to IEng; overseas equivalent qualifications are also welcome; or at least 5 years� relevant industrial experience (preferably codified design) or a professional qualification (for example, CEng); applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5 with 6.0 in each component.

Course modules

Bridge engineering modules: Bridge deck loading and analysis; bridge management; durability of bridges and structures; long span bridges; pre-stressed concrete bridge design; steel and composite bridge design; construction management modules: Construction, management and law; construction organisation; project and risk management. Geotechnical engineering modules: Geotechnics engineering 2; soil�structure interaction; structural engineering modules: Concrete building design; design of masonry structures; earthquake engineering; space structures; steel building design; structural mechanics and finite elements; structural safety and reliability; subsea engineering; infrastructure engineering and management modules: Infrastructure investment and financing; infrastructure asset management; infrastructure systems, interdependencies and resilience; sustainability and infrastructure water engineering modules: Applied chemistry and microbiology (intensive); environmental health; groundwater control; pollution control and waste management; regulation and management; wastewater treatment and sewerage; water resources management and hydraulic modelling; water treatment.

Some overseas students can apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS) award, if they are in possession of a 1st Class Honours degree or equivalent in civil or structural engineering.
