Renewable Energy Systems Engineering

Created in the context of the rapid advancement of the renewable energy industry, this programme is suited to graduates from engineering, science or other relevant backgrounds with an interest in pursuing a successful career in research, technological change and the commercialisation of renewable energy systems. Students will investigate both renewable energy and systems technologies, in order to become competent in the research and development (R and D) and engineering tasks that are demanded of scientific engineers in the sustainable development sector. The programme also provides students with opportunities to learn about similar renewable energy technologies, energy sector economics and supply chain management.

Entry requirements

A minimum 2.1 Honours degree or an overseas equivalent in an engineering, science or related subject. Practitioners with suitable qualifications and relevant experience in engineering, science or technology are also welcome to apply. Applicants whose 1st language is not English will require IELTS 6.5 or above with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

Course modules

Compulsory modules: Dissertation; biomass processing technology; wind energy technology; process modelling and simulation; process systems design; optimisation and decision-making; technology, business and research seminars. Optional modules: Renewable energy technologies; solar energy technology; supply chain management; process and energy integration; energy economics and technology; economics of international oil and gas; sustainable development applications; knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence; transitions to a low-carbon energy economy; introduction to petroleum production; process safety and operations integrity; refinery and petrochemical processing.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include a dissertation, examinations and continuous assessments. The latter will be based on solutions to tutorial questions, reports covering practical sessions and fieldwork, and essays on a number of suitable topics.
