Microwave Engineering and Wireless Subsystems Design

Students learn about a range of modern theories and techniques, accompanied by topics on wireless frequencies and sizes of RF and microwave devices, from the lowest frequencies used in radio frequency identification (RFID) systems through to systems used at microwave frequencies that can have applications in satellite communication systems and fifth generation wireless communication systems demanding high spectrum bandwidth. Theoretical concepts including radio design and radio systems are established in the lectures, which are complemented by practical implementation in laboratory sessions.

Entry requirements

An Honours degree in electronic engineering, mathematics, computing or physical sciences. Minimum entry level is a 2.2 from a good UK university, or overseas equivalent. Relevant industrial experience will also be considered. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or above with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.

Course modules

Students study 2 compulsory modules, radio frequency (RF) systems and circuit design and microwave engineering principles, in the 1st and 2nd semester respectively. Compulsory modules: Extended project; microwave engineering principles; RF systems and circuit design. Optional modules: Antennas and propagation; mobile communications a and b; nanoelectronics and devices; nanoscience and nanotechnology; optoelectronics; principles of telecommunications and packet networks; RF and microwave fundamentals; satellite communications a and b.

Assessment methods

Assessment methods include examinations and coursework.

Sponsorship information

CTA funding available; a few scholarships are also available from the IEE and other charitable trusts; there are also DFIDS scholarships available within the University for overseas students, but these are very competitive and early application is vital.
