Our programme enables students to obtain a postgraduate qualification in the subject by following a customised programme of taught modules tailored specifically, in agreement with the programme director, to suit the student's interests and previous knowledge. For the duration of the research project, students are assigned a primary research supervisor who is an academic member of staff within the Department. Students meet their supervisor formally at least once a week.
A minimum 2.2 Honours degree (or overseas equivalent) in the physical sciences or in a relevant engineering discipline. Applicants with suitable industrial experience will also be considered. English language requirements: IELTS minimum overall: 6.5; IELTS minimum by component: 6.0. The University offers intensive English language pre-sessional courses, designed to take students to the level of English ability and skill required for their studies.
Compulsory modules: Research project and dissertation; research skills. Optional modules: Diagnostic applications of ionising radiation physics; environmental physics and environmental protection; extended group project; introduction to radiation biology; non-ionising radiation imaging; nonlinear physics; nuclear power and non-ionising radiation; radiation laboratory skills; radiation measurement; radiation physics; radiation protection; therapy physics; topics in theoretical physics.
Assessment is based on a combination of coursework and examinations as well as a research project.
