University of Sussex
International Teacher Education
This course is designed for international students interested in teaching or teacher education who wish to experience and study education and practice primarily in the UK. It does not lead to a professional teaching qualification but enables you to develop your understanding of a broad range of educational issues and theoretical perspectives on practice and policy in both UK and global contexts. A significant element of the course is to enable you to understand the English education system and a range of appropriate pedagogic approaches. There are two strands. Teacher strand: for those interested in learning about pedagogy and practice in depth. Teacher Educator strand: for those interested in how Initial Teacher Education (ITE) students are prepared for teaching. For this strand, professional experience of teaching is essential. You spend considerable time at partner schools as well as at the University. Seminars are organised for a number of the modules in these strands to ensure that the content and discussion is centred around your focus area and needs. Both strands have opportunities to firstly shadow relevant teachers/ITE colleagues and then move towards contributing to teaching in school, or in ITE sessions, where appropriate.
