Neuroscience

This course is ideal for you if you have a strong academic record in neuroscience or a closely related discipline and wish to specialise and strengthen your knowledge of the subject and to gain laboratory experience before moving to a research career. You benefit from being taught by faculty in one of the most interconnected neuroscience communities in the UK. This MRes is taught by academics from the School of Life Sciences, the School of Psychology, the Department of Informatics, Brighton and Sussex Medical School and the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Studies, bringing together over 50 Sussex Neuroscience research groups.

Entry requirements

A 1st or upper 2nd Class undergraduate Honours Degree in psychology, neuroscience or a closely related subject.

Course modules

Autumn term: advanced techniques in neuroscience; life sciences master of science research proposal. Spring term: current topics in neuroscience; neuroscience research project 1. Summer term: neuroscience research project 2. Throughout the year, students choose additional options from advanced research methods in psychology; computational neuroscience; development of the nervous system; drug addiction and its treatment; endocrinology and disease; ethics, philosophy and methods of research; functional magnetic resonance imaging; genome stability, genetic diseases and cancer; intelligence in animals and machines; introduction to genes and biochemistry; linear models in statistics; mathematics and computational methods for complex systems; molecular genetics; molecular pharmacology; neuronal plasticity and gene regulation; neuronal transduction and transmission; neuroscience of consciousness; social neuroscience; structure and function in the brain; topics in cognitive neuroscience.

Assessment methods

The taught modules are assessed by a variety of methods including term papers, presentations and unseen examinations. The project is assessed by a dissertation.
