The University of the Highlands and Islands is the United Kingdom’s leading tertiary university. Based in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, with our distinctive partnership of 13 campuses across the region we are locally-based, but with national and international reach. 

Through this network we offer educational opportunities at all levels from access courses to postgraduate research.  

Our reputation is built on our innovative approach to learning and our distinctive research and curriculum. At postgraduate level many of our courses can be studied fully online from anywhere in the world; others are campus-based where you will have access to research-active subject specialists.

Postgraduate research

Research is undertaken across the university and we are developing a strong reputation in a range of areas, enhanced by exceptional results in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise, in which over 69% of the research we submitted was judged to be internationally excellent or world-leading.

Our postgraduate student community continues to grow, with support provided by our Graduate School and Careers and Employability Centre. 

Funding and Scholarships

The university is pleased to be able to offer a limited numbers of places with full tuition fee support for Scottish/EU fee status students starting on our MSc Applied Bioscience Skills for Industry in September 2016, to help talented students join this key growth sector for the Scottish economy.  Fees will be funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programmes. Tuitions fee loans (for full and part-time study) and living cost loans (for full-time students) to study up to PgDip level may be available for eligible students on a number of our Masters programmes from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). For information on eligibility and how to apply visit the SAAS website. 

There are other funding sources including: Professional and Career Development Loans from the UK Government and Postgraduate Loans from Student Finance England for students living in England prior to the start of the course.

Student Support

All our students are supported through their studies by approachable expert staff who offer both academic and other support that may be required, whether they choose to study on-campus or online. 

We were the first institution to adopt the new Student Partnership agreement which sets out how students and staff can work together to improve the student experience.

All students have a personal academic tutor, and our student support team can assist students with disabilities or additional support requirements. 

Careers and Employability Centre

As a postgraduate student with the University of the Highlands and Islands you will be developing a particular academic specialism. While studying with us we aim to provide careers and employability support to help you translate your academic learning into a successful career in your chosen field.
