Alcohol and Drug Studies

The programme offers an understanding of the processes involved in individuals becoming substance users and problematic substance users; influences on behaviour change, including policy, legal, educational, psychosocial and pharmacological approaches are examined.

Entry requirements

Degree or professional qualification normally required, plus employment experience working with alcohol- and/or drug-related problems; candidates lacking the academic qualifications may be considered providing they have relevant professional or voluntary experience, exhibit a high degree of commitment to the addiction field and, on interview, give an indication that they are able to cope with the academic level required; such applicants are required to complete written work prior to acceptance.

Course modules

Modules include: Understanding substance use and addiction; change and intervention methods; placement; research methods; change and intervention methods; research philosophy; literature review; responding to substance use and addiction; research project.
