This course focuses on the general elements of English teaching: speaking and listening; writing for different purposes; reading literary and non-literary texts, including drama and media texts; delivered through a wide variety of pedagogical approaches, including drama and the technologies which enhance communication and the retrieval of information (ICT); students are encouraged to research current approaches to teaching English, but also to be inventive and innovative in producing teaching materials, engaging pupils and making this core subject lively and relevant.

Entry requirements

A good initial degree in English and grade C or above in GCSE mathematics and English (or equivalent); applications are also considered from those holding a joint Honours degree in which English language, English literature or a related subject forms a major part; Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure.

Course modules

Curriculum studies; information communications technology (ICT) in subject teaching; professional studies.

Assessment methods

During the year the students' complete and submit coursework assignments in both their curriculum studies subject; during school placements teachers and tutors formally observe and assess a number of the students' lessons and at the end of each term the students receive a written report which summarises their progress towards meeting the required standard.
