Secondary Education (Geography)

The geography course provides a professional introduction to a teaching career and stimulating opportunities to gain the confidence and skills for dealing with the daily challenges of teaching geography in a secondary school.

Entry requirements

Good Honours 1st degree comprising at least 50 per cent geography (preferably a balance of both human and physical); joint Honours degrees, for example geography and development studies, are also considered; degrees in closely related subjects such as environmental science, geology, African studies, etc are considered where combined with a good grade in A-level geography or substantial, relevant and broad geographical experience and understanding can be demonstrated; Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure.

Course modules

Curriculum studies; information communications technology (ICT) in subject teaching; professional studies.

Assessment methods

During the year the students' complete and submit coursework assignments in both their curriculum studies subject; during school placements teachers and tutors formally observe and assess a number of the students' lessons and at the end of each term the students receive a written report which summarises their progress towards meeting the required standard.
