English (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)

The course is vocationally focused; it provides students with a grounding in the teaching of grammar and the acquiring of assessment skills, and in the theories and methodologies of teaching English as a foreign language; it also provides the necessary skills to prepare and deliver courses in English as a foreign language and to design assessment tools and practices; core to the programme is an initial observation of classes in EFL, and a substantial period of observed and mentored teaching practice in a placement provided as part of the programme.

Entry requirements

At least a 2.1 degree in English literature or a cognate discipline (those with a 2.2 may be considered for entry to a postgraduate diploma in the first instance); non-standard applicants are also considered.

Course modules

All years: research methods and skills; teaching grammar and acquiring assessment skills; the essentials of the EFL classroom; the theory and methodology of teaching English as a foreign language.

Assessment methods

Assessment is through course work; this includes: essays, tasks designed to enhances research skills, preparation and delivery of class room materials.
