Church History

The programme offers a student experience through a unique programme of study taught by a range of experts within the field of church history, encouraging the student to explore in depth a range of topics relating to the history of the Christian church from its inception to the present.

Entry requirements

A 1st class or upper 2nd class undergraduate degree; the school encourages students with an equivalent and appropriate professional qualification or significant and relevant professional experience to apply; a non-graduate may also be admitted to candidature provided that she/he has gained a minimum of 3 years professional experience relevant and appropriate to the programme and they can demonstrate a satisfactory level of writing /analytical skills.

Course modules

Core modules: Study and research methodology; options: the new testament apocrypha; themes in orthodox theology; pagans, Jews and Christians in late antiquity; Jews and Christians in dialogue and dispute; the virgin Mary in earliest Christianity; Marian theology and devotion in the middle ages; Anglo-Saxon christian heroic literature; readings in insular theological texts; the archaeology of the Celtic churches; the Celtic Arthur: Arthur in early Celtic history and tradition, up to Geoffrey of Monmouth; the reformation in Britain and Ireland 1500-1700; church and state in Britain and Europe 1640-1820; church parties and 19th-century Anglicanism; Christianity, culture and society in 20th century Britain; war, peace and the British churches in the 19th and 20th centuries early christian asceticism; mission and pastoral strategies for a world city: London 1837-1901.

Assessment methods

A range of assessment methods are used including summative assignments, course work, essays and a final dissertation.
