Primary Education (Upper Primary, 7-11)
The course is designed to prepare students for a career in teaching in the upper primary (7-11 years) across the range of the primary curriculum; he programme has 2 main components: school-based experience and campus-based studies.
Applicants should be graduates of a university, polytechnic or college of higher education approved by the university of Wales; passes (grades A-C) in English language, mathematics and science at O-level or GCSE (or their equivalent) are a necessary requirement for candidates of all ages; applicants are also expected to have either an A-level (or equivalent) or a degree in a national curriculum subject suitable for primary teaching in order to offer a curriculum specialism; Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure; interview.
The assessment of students on the PGCE (primary) programme has 2 components: practical teaching in which teaching skills and professional competence are considered; course work in which a series of written assignments are assessed; in addition there are subject knowledge audits in mathematics, English and science.
