Secondary Education (Biology with Science)
This course trains the student to teach biology up to the A- and AS-level examinations and all the sciences up to at least year 9 (key stage 3) of the secondary school; the focus is on planning effective lessons, teaching methods, the role of practical work and other activities, class management and control, assessing pupils' progress, together with a knowledge of how people learn, the applications of science in society and the role of information technology to support the student's teaching.
A degree in a biological science subject in which a significant proportion of the units/modules are biological; A-level (or equivalent) passes in t2 of: biology, chemistry, physics (or undergraduate units/modules with a significant number of them in lieu); GCSEs in English and mathematics at grade C or above; competence in using information communications technology (ICT) is expected; Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced disclosure.

During the year the students' complete and submit coursework assignments in both their curriculum studies subject; during school placements teachers and tutors formally observe and assess a number of the students' lessons and at the end of each term the students receive a written report which summarises their progress towards meeting the required standard.
