Areas of research include: analysis of film and television texts; European cinema and television aesthetics; gender, ethnicity, history and representation; current staff research interests: national cinemas and identities; Spanish cinema; early film; British film history; film exhibition; film acting; film, television and video in Britain; cultural studies and film; modernism and the avant-gardes; music and film; representation; Italian and Indian cinema; Hollywood cinema in the studio era; the Western; gender in popular film and television; costume; mise-en-scene, film aesthetics and fictional worlds; Nicholas Ray, Fellini, Hitchcock, Renoir Ophuls, Ozu; French cinema; film history; national cinemas, popular European films; women directors.

Entry requirements

Master's degree; an Honours degree in humanities or social sciences; applicants should be able to demonstrate evidence of developed knowledge of or strong interest in film and television studies; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 100, PTE 70, CAE 60+ or CPE.
