University of Warwick
Ethics, Jurisprudence, Mental Health and Society
This is a 5-day taught module followed by an assignment and is available as a stand-alone PGA or as a module within the MSC mental health programme; traditional courses in medical ethics are structured around 'issues' (such as consent, confidentiality and resource allocation); this module, by contrast, investigates ethical issues as they arise at key stages of the clinical process (psychopathology, classification, diagnosis and aetiology); this clinically based structure reflects the fact that, in mental health, ethical issues (i.e. issues of value) are endemic rather than being confined just to issues of treatment choice; the module opens by examining 2 different approaches to ethical theorising: deontological and consequentiality; unit 2 considers the nature of professional expertise and how this constrains issues of professional as opposed to personal ethics; unit 3 examines the role of values in psychiatric practice; unit 4 looks at some of the legal issues surrounding the problems of capacity and autonomy for mental health practice; unit 5 returns to the problem of values and practice and asks to what extent our values may be incommensurable and how a notion of dissensus may be of use.
Applicants usually need at least an Upper 2nd Class Honours in a 1st degree of an approved university in a relevant discipline or disciplines; if your 1st language is not English, applicants are expected to obtain 1 of the following recognised English language qualifications: IELTS (British Council International Testing System) of at least 6.5; TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of at least 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) or 92 (internet-based iBT); if you are in any doubt about the suitability of your qualifications and experiences, please contact the course co-ordinator or our postgraduate admissions team.
