Management for Business Excellence

The course is designed for those who want to become leaders and managers of business excellence in industry. It is suitable for high achievers who want to be challenged in the way they think about business management and problems. Students on this course will gain an understanding of the philosophies, strategies, processes and techniques that enable change and the management of excellence in a business. They also develop key management and technology skills, including leadership, customer focused product and process development, asset and resource management, and 6-sigma.

Entry requirements

Lower 2nd Class Honours degree, or equivalent, in a business, management or technology related subject. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS: 6.5 (with no score less than 6.0), or Pearson (Academic): 62 (with no score less than 59). Other English language qualifications may be considered.

Course modules

Modules include: Financial analysis and control systems; process improvement using 6 sigma; organisations, people and performance; product excellence using 6 sigma; creating business excellence; robust decision making; leadership and excellence; knowledge-based asset management.

Assessment methods

The course is modular - each student takes a combination of core and elective modules. 10 modules are studied and assessed in total. Modules consist of nominally 40 hours directed tuition in the form of lectures, seminars, group work, presentations, case studies and e-learning. This is covered in a full-immersion, intensive week. Modules are assessed by Post Module Assignment - this is typically a further 40 -60 hours of work. The taught modules account for 50% of the Master's degree. A major individual research project, submitted in the form of a dissertation accounts for the other 50%. This should take approximately 900 hours of study time. An oral examination is held upon completion.
