Primary Education (Early Years)

This one year postgraduate course will recommend you, on completion, for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with full PGCE to teach children aged 3-7 years in primary or infant schools. We work closely with over 300 partnership schools to prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, including delivery of the curriculum for EYFS and the National Curriculum for Key Stage 1. Upon completing this course you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will gain 90 credits at Masters level.

Entry requirements

On application you must have: graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2.2 or above Honours degree. Preference is given to candidates with a 2.1 or above honours degree in a relevant subject; hold at least a Grade C or above in GCSE English language, mathematics and science. Other qualifications may be approved as equivalent; school experience: have had some experience in schools and/or early years settings focusing on the Foundation Stage as well as Key Stage 1 classrooms, so that you are familiar with the atmosphere and demands across the early years. After submission of your application you must: pass the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy; satisfy to the university physical and mental suitability to undertake teacher training in order to comply with the Department for Education.

Assessment methods

Training and assessment are designed around the teaching standards for early years. The university sessions are interactive and delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops. Monitoring and development of your subject knowledge and developing expertise in the classroom is assessed through audits, presentations, directed tasks and assignments.
