Primary Education with English Specialism
This one year postgraduate course will recommend you, on completion, for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with full PGCE, to teach children aged 5-11 in primary, infant, junior or first and middle schools. We work closely with over 300 partnership schools to prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, including teaching across the primary curriculum. Upon completing this course you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will gain 90 credits at Masters level.
On application you must: have graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2.2 or above Honours degree. Preference is given to candidates with a 2.1 or above Honours degree in a relevant subject; hold at least a Grade C or above in GCSE English language, mathematics and science. Other qualifications may be approved as equivalent; have had some experience in schools focusing on mainstream Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classrooms, so that you are familiar with the atmosphere and demands across primary. After submission of your application you must: pass the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy; satisfy to the university physical and mental suitability to undertake teacher training in order to comply with the Department for Education.
Training and assessment are designed around the teaching standards for primary years. The university sessions are interactive and delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops. Monitoring and development of your subject knowledge and developing expertise in the classroom is assessed through audits, presentations, directed tasks and assignments.
