Secondary Education (Mathematics)
This one year postgraduate course will recommend you for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with full PGCE. We work closely with over 300 partnership schools to prepare you fully for the practical demands of teaching, including the teaching of all National Curriculum subjects. On a personal level, you will develop a professional understanding of current issues in education along with the ability to effectively communicate and reflect upon your teaching. Upon completing this course you will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and will gain 90 credits at Master's level.
On application you must: have graduated, or be about to graduate, from a UK Higher Educational Institute or equivalent, with a 2.2 or above Honours degree. Preference is given to candidates with a 2.1 or above Honours degree in a relevant subject. Normally at least 50 per cent of your degree content should relate to mathematics; hold at least Grade C in GCSE English language and mathematics. Other qualifications may be approved as equivalent; have had experience in schools focusing on mainstream Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, so that you are familiar with the atmosphere and demands across secondary. After submission of your application you must: pass the Professional Skills Tests in numeracy and literacy; satisfy to the university physical and mental suitability to undertake teacher training in order to comply with the Department for Education.
Training and assessment are designed around practical, professional and academic competences. The university sessions are interactive, you will enjoy regular seminars, tutorials and workshops as well as more traditional lectures alongside trainees from all routes. Your academic work will be assessed using a variety of strategies including essays, subject knowledge audits, presentations and posters.
