International Relations

This course encourages you to reframe and critically assess key theories and core issues in international relations. It gives you a gateway into PhD research and careers in policy, the civil service and the international NGO sector. A core module on Theories and Issues in International Relations equips you with the skills to frame contemporary issues in international politics through multiple lenses of understanding.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 degree (or equivalent) in political science or a related discipline; English language requirements: IELTS 7.0; TOEFL (iBT) 100, PTE 70, CAE 60+ or CPE.

Course modules

Modules include: International relations theory; plus 2 options from: theories and issues in international political economy; globalisation, governance and development, democratisation and development; international assistance; European integration; politics of international trade; international business in the international system; politics of global finance; international relations of Pacific Asia; political economy and international politics of the Islamic world; violence, theory and the subject of international politics, East Asian development models; or from the following 1/2 options: transformation of the former Soviet Union, internal and external political and economic reform since 1991; transformation of east and central Europe, internal and external political and economic reform since 1989; problems of British economic management; explanation in social science; plus subject to approval 1/2 options in: gender, imperialism and international development; immigration and nationality law; ethnicity and global order; race, identity and ethnicity.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by essays plus, for Master's, a 15,000-word dissertation.
