International Security

This programme examines key questions of war and peace, life and death, safety and survival. A core module on Concepts and Theories of International Security provides a lens on the most pressing contemporary challenges to international security. It encourages you to develop critical and reflective perspectives on the engagement between 'traditional' and 'critical' approaches to the issues under consideration.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 degree (or international equivalent) in political science or a closely related subject; non-native English speakers should have an IELTS score of 7.0, TOEFL (iBT) 100, PTE 70, CAE 60+ or CPE or equivalent; a strong statement of purpose; 2 strong academic references.

Course modules

Modules include: Concepts and theories in international security; core module 2: new security challenges; options; international relations theory; theories and issues in international political economy; democratisation and development; European integration; the politics of international trade; the politics of global finance; international business and the international system; East-Asian development models; political economy and international politics of the Islamic world; globalisation, governance and development; international relations of Pacific Asia; Europe and the world; 1/2 modules: the transformation of the former soviet union: internal and external political and economic reform since 1991; the transformation of East and Central Europe: internal and external political and economic reform since 1989; governing Britain since 1918; issues in democratisation; global networks; explanation in social science; data analysis; comparative politics; qualitative methods; comparative theory of the welfare state.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by 2 5,000 word essays; taught option modules by 2 essays, each of 5,000 words (1 essay for 1/2 modules); additionally there is a 10,000 word dissertation for the Master's.
