Social and Political Thought

This programme addresses key concepts and ideas that are central to the analysis of contemporary society, politics and culture. These include debates over the basis of contemporary capitalism, neoliberalism and biopolitics, and the fundamental socio-biological question of what it means to be 'human'. The programme anchors many of these debates and concerns within the history of social and political thought.

Entry requirements

2.1 Honours degree in any arts or social science subject; English language requirements: IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 92, PTE 62, CAE 60+ or CPE.

Course modules

Modules include: Social and political thought 1; social theory and politics 2; Marx's social theory 1 and 2; sociology of modernity 1 and 2; modern European thought 1 and 2; the idea of Europe; sociology of the Holocaust; feminist media studies; critical and deconstructive social theory; contemporary feminist theory; philosophy and social theory.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by 6 5,000-word essays plus, for Master's, 10,000-word dissertation.

5 ESRC quota awards for taught Master's courses; 2 Arts and Humanities Research Council awards; Overseas Research Scheme studentships.
